Boit Pips Mulvey for First Ten Mile Victory

Kenyan Josphat Boit took the honours in the Lifestyle Sports-adidas Frank Duffy Ten Mile in the Phoenix Park today, Saturday 16th August, coming in just ahead of Dubliner Vinnie Mulvey.

The Arkansas based athlete, and training partner of Alistair Craig, was competing in his first every ten mile, and was happy with his win in what was his longest competitive outing to date.

“It wasn’t great running conditions out there, it was quite windy, it was in our faces for at least half the course, so yes, I was pretty happy with the time I got” he said after the race.

“That’s the longest distance I’ve ran competitively, so I did find it a bit challenging, 5k is definitely my preferred race”

There was a nail biting sprint to the line between Boit and Raheny Shamrocks man Vinnie Mulvey, winner of the Five-Mile in the Park last month, with only four seconds between the two in end. Mulvey, who also finished second to Boit in last weekends Streets of Galway race, was disappointed not to make it two wins in a row.

“We were together all the way along the course, pretty much to I guess the last half mile and he pulled away a little. It was tough out there, the wind was very strong, and it was quite humid as well, so it wasn’t ideal conditions at all. I’m disappointed all right now, there wasn’t much in it at the end, he just had better legs than me down the final stretch”

The women’s race was won by former Irish Olympian Maria McCambridge in 58.16. Dublin born but now Donegal based, McCambridge competed in the 5k in Athens, and is set to tackle her first Marathon this October. Her partner Gary Crossan, one of Ireland’s leading Marathon runners, finished 5th overall in the men’s race.

And former Tipperary hurler John Leahy set the Premier County up for success tomorrow with a great performance, coming in under his target of 90 minutes.

“The old knees were giving me a lot of trouble this week, so I was quite nervous going into the race” said Leahy, who is committed to running the Lifestyle Sports-adidas Dublin Marathon this October, “I’m absolutely delighted with how it went and my time, it’s a big relief to have another milestone out of the way.”

A record 3,600 people took part in today’s race, including wheelchair athlete David Griffith. Despite the high winds and humidity, there was relief that rain held off for most of the race.
