Surge in numbers signing up for 5 mile challenge

The running bug is catching as Irish people have sprung into action earlier than ever to sign up for this year’s Lifestyle Sports - adidas Irish Runner 5 mile challenge; the first in the annual three part race series. Already over 2,000 people have signed up for the race which takes place on Saturday 18th July in the Phoenix Park.

Since it was introduced seven years ago, all three races have seen a huge surge in popularity, with last year’s 5 mile race attracting a record 3,600 entrants. The series was originally introduced to work as part of a training programme for the Marathon, with a 5 mile race in July, a 10 mile in August, and a half-marathon in September, it is an ideal testing ground for anyone planning to run Dublin.

Last year’s winner was Raheny Shamrock’s Vinny Mulvey in a time of 23.57. And it was success on the double for Shamrocks with his club mate Annette Kealy claiming the Women’s title in 28.22.

However the series isn’t strictly a precursor to the Marathon, rather the races have become popular in its own right attracting runners from all walks of life and varying levels of fitness.

Race Director of the Dublin Marathon Jim Aughney said “we get people who just run the five mile, or run all three, but don’t intend to run the Marathon. There has just been a phenomenal growth in number of people running, for enjoyment, health and fitness. The Race Series just gives people that little bit of an extra challenge or test. Last year saw a huge increase in the number of women taking part in the series and we hope that trend will continue this year also.”
